Bathgate Thistle 11 – 1 Polbeth United

After their tremendous first league result, our 2002s were in a buoyant mood prior to their first Scottish Cup tie.

The starting eleven was: Daniel, Graham, Luke, Callum, Adam, Callum, Aiden, Jack, Shaun, Shay and Owen.

Early Bathgate pressure resulted in a corner, which was taken by Shaun. Shaun’s tremendous “curler” ends up in the top corner! a tremendous start, 1 – 0.

The boys were intent on keeping up the pressure and Owen strikes a fine shot which bounces off the bottom of the post and Callum happily taps in the rebound, 2 – 0.

Two minutes later hits the same post at the same location, however this time the ball is cleared by the defiant Polbeth defence.

The excellent passing game that we expect from Bathgate continues, as Polbeth are now forced to defend in numbers. However, in 25 minutes Shaun takes a more direct route, runs through the Polbeth defence and hits a fine shot of the base of the same post Owen had hit twice earlier.

Taking his cue from Shaun, Adam decides to be more direct too. He picks the ball up in midfield, takes a run down the left wing and cuts back for Lewis – just on for Owen – to hit high into the top of the net for 3 – 0 in 30 minutes.

On 35 minutes Shaun again goes down the left wing and cuts a fine pass back for Owen, who heads towards goal. It looked like a goal all the way, however, a defender strongly heads the ball off the line and out to safety.

The left wing was proving to be the way forward for Bathgate and again Shaun took on the right side of the Polbeth defence, cut back for Aiden, who hits a sweet shot straight into the top of the net, 4 – 0.

From the kick off, Polbeth are awarded a free kick, midway into the Bathgate half. The ball is cleared by Luke to Shaun, who goes on another amazing left wing run and thunders in number five, right on the stroke of half time for 5 – 0.

The second half starts with Ciaran in goals in place of Daniel.

Bathgate force an early second half corner. Jack heads in a tremendous 15 yard looping header to the top of the net. However, the referee blows his whistle for a free kick to Polbeth for pushing.

Polbeth are now feeling the pressure down their left side in the second half. Nathan, running up the right wing from his own half, turns his near perfect cross into the perfect goal! 6 -0

A fierce free kick from Polbeth to Ciaran’s near side is cleared well by the keeper.

From the clearance Calumn releases the perfect pass to Nathan, who makes another fine right wing run and scores his second, 7 – 0.

Two minutes later, a cut back from Shay allows Nathan to hammer in his hat-trick, 8 – 0.

Five minutes of Polbeth pressure finally brought them some reward. A few slick passes and a shot for 8 – 1.

The Bathgate midfield of Owen, Shay and Owen showed some delightful inter-passing,  before releasing Callum to slot past the keeper for 9 -1.

From the kick off, Callum is released again, however, this time the keeper produces a fine save.

Further Bathgate pressure and Owen is released. The keeper proves he’s no slouch, by again running out and saving. However, his clearance goes straight to Callum, who releases Owen who slots in with pace, 10 – 1.

The kick off results in Bathgate surging the ball forward. This time Callum takes on the defence and slots in for 11 – 1.

A perfect start to our 2002s Scottish Cup campaign.
