After some fine displays over the last few games, our 2002s were in confident mood for this home Regional Cup tie against Bonnyrigg Rose.
In the first minute Bathgate were off to another flier! The ball neatly played in midfield, then passed back by Callum to Ciaran. Ciaran taps on to Callum who releases Shaun for a left wing run and cut back for Lewis, who taps in for 1 – 0.
Shaun is being given his usual supply on the left wing and as usual, Shaun uses the ball brilliantly. This time Shaun’s run at the defence destroys two dallying defenders and allows Shaun to cut back for Lewis. Lewis is under strong pressure from two defenders, however Lewis is the more determined of the three and he pokes in, 2 – 0.
After only six minutes the game appears to be in the bag. The pressure has been relentless and a Bonnyrigg goal kick is chested down by Jack. Jack releases the ball to Lewis who sends an inch perfect pass to Shay who left foots in for 3 – 0.
Bonnyrigg’s first foray into the Bathgate half is cleverly stopped by Luke who calmly takes the ball round two midfielders’ then passes to Shaun. Everyone knew what was expected and Shaun didn’t disappoint. After leaving four defenders floundering, Shaun slams his shot into the far side of goal, 4 – 0.
Luke, playing strongly, picks up a loose ball on the half way line, then some midfield interplay between Aiden, Callum and Jack, releases Lewis for a fine shot which is held well by the Bonnyrigg goalie. A Bathgate throw-in on the left is taken by Aiden who passes to Shaun who releases Adam on the overlap. Adam’s strong run and shot in the box makes it 5 – 0.
Passing play down the right by Owen and Aiden releases Shay who, in the 13th minute scores for 6 – 0. The 25th minute brings on all outfield subs, Callum, Nathan, Jamie, Owen and Callum. In 28 minutes, a thoughtful through ball from Jack to Lewis, allows Lewis to challenge the keeper on 12 yards. The goalie can’t hold the ball, which runs loose and runs through for Lewis, who had ensured he was up quickly from the goalies challenge, to score from an acute angle, 7 – 0.
Nathan releases a delightful through pass to Owen, who dummies and Callum calmly slots for 8 – 0.
HT 8 – 0
It’s the same start to the second half, Bathgate pressure! In the first minute Jack passes to Jamie who releases Owen who shoots just past the goalies left post. Lewis, still looking for his hat-trick, takes on the defence and strikes a superb shot, which strikes the keepers far post and bounces back into his welcoming arms and safety.
The tenth minute of the second half produces the ninth goal. Owen is brought down on the edge of the box. Owen picks himself up and strikes a super shot into the top of the net, 9 – 0.
Graham knocks a ball on for Callum who rounds the keeper and in the 15th second half minute, the score is now in double figures, 10 – 0.
A loose ball is picked up in midfield by Shaun, who notices the goalie off his line. As defenders crowd around him, Shaun simply and calmly chips the keeper and the score is now 11 – 0.
In 21 minutes, Bonnyrigg try to force their way into the Bathgate half, Callum strongly challenges his opposite number, takes the ball and scores, 12 – 0.
The Bonnyrigg boys didn’t learn any lesson from their previous mistake as, in 22 minutes, Callum again takes the ball off a Bonnyrigg boy and slots away for 13 – 0.
Fine inter-passing between Shaun and Callum allows Shaun to shoot in for 14 – 0.
Shay, who had been doing some excellent off ball work, picks up a loose ball in midfield, runs through a thoroughly demoralised defence and scores for 15 – 0.
A strong midfield challenge from Shaun and a calm pass to Callum who claims yet another goal, 16 – 0.
Callum, who’s loving his left wing role, lets Nathan in with a near perfect pass. Nathan, never shot shy, scores and the final result is 17 – 0.
More confidence will be gained by this result, however, there will be sterner tests ahead and the 2002s will be reminded by their coaches they have to keep up all their hard work on the field and in training.
