BOB MALCOLM LEAGUE CUP: Thursday 21 April, 2016, Bathgate Sports Centre

Pic 2A second-half blitz from Bathgate put paid to Kirkfield and continued the West Lothian side’s 100 per cent League Cup record. Leading 1-0 at the interval, the boys in blue dominated the second period to finish comfortable 5-1 winners against opponents who are always tough.

A deflected effort from Billy broke the deadlock in what was a tight first half. Although Bathgate had enjoyed plenty possession, they were struggling to break through Kirfield’s well-organised defence. The half-time introduction of Sam and Kieran brought fresh energy and played a pivotal role in lifting the hosts.

Pic 4Bailey’s composed finish put Bathgate 2-0 ahead early in the second period, although Kirkfield reduced the deficit with a well-taken goal on the break. At 2-1, the game was evenly poised and might have gone either way.

Kieran intervened with a fine third to restore Bathgate’s two-goal advantage. Billy’s deep free-kick from the left was nodded back across goal by Bailey, and the midfielder executed a fine first-time finish to slot the ball into the corner of the net.

Left-back Leon completed a strong display with his team’s fourth goal, prodding home a cross at the near post after a good attacking run. Bailey notched the fifth to complete the scoring near the end and continue Bathgate’s excellent recent run of form.
