JAGS DEFLATE WHITBURN ASPERATIONS
Sunday 18th August, 2013. WLAYFC U-16 League. Meadow Park, Bathgate
A bright new shiny team was unveiled in their bright new shiny strips as the Jags got off to a solid if unspectacular winning start. With a swirling wind and a firm and bumpy pitch both sides got off to a nervous start but Whitburn gradually took the initiative and took a deserved albeit fortuitous lead when a high floated free kick drifted in at the far post. Thistle who had created little at this point seemed to settle slightly and equalised with another wind assisted free kick from Davidson which bounced over the unfortunate Whitburn keeper.
So an evenly balanced game remained even at the break in an undistinguished first half. However, if the first two goals could be described as flukey there was nothing flukey about the Jags winners as they took a better grip of the midfield in the second half and carved open the Whitburn defence on both occasions to send their support into raptures.
Firstly Hughes played a devastating one two with Kelly exchanging passes outside the box to run onto a perfect pass to hammer the ball low into the net. And then the classic wing play of Young who had been sent scampering down the wing by Thomson, raced past a couple of defenders before pulling the ball back from the touchline for Maguire to slam home from close range.
Whitburn did strike the bar twice in the second half but the Jags clinical finishing got them over the line and the only down side was the 3 needless bookings incurred.
MoM: Davidson involved in everything and looked solid as a rock.
