CLICHES ABOUND IN JAGS EXIT

Scottish Cup 3rd Round

Forrester High School, Edinburgh.

Salvesen lucked into the next round of the grail when they undeservedly mugged the Jags in extra-time after trailing for the majority of the match.

In a match, which was spoilt as a spectacle by some intermittent atrocious weather, the Jags returned home wondering how they had lost the match they had controlled for long periods. With a full squad of players and coaches to choose from, the Jags entered the fray full of confidence and took the game immediately to their opponents.

It was no surprise when they took the lead through a long range free-kick from Swan which evaded the jumping wall(?) and ended in the corner of the net. Sustained pressure could not provide a second to consolidate their position and apart from a couple of breakaways Salvesen were very subdued.

With the wind at their backs an aerial assault was envisaged by the Jags defence but such was their control and passing game in evidence it was they who looked most likely as the game drew to a close. However, in football as in life always expect the unexpected, as 3mins from the end of normal time a misdirected pass fell kindly for Salvesen and extra-time was inevitable.

With the first period blank the advantage seemed to fall to the Jags as they continued to dominate without finding a killer punch, when you guessed, a masked Salvesen player picked up a loose pass and ended the Jags interest.

A terrific team performance which really didn’t deserve to be consigned to the hard luck re-cycling bin with a really mature display from everyone involved.

M.O.M.: Thought Potter and Bell strolled the game but some immaculate handling and distribution by McMahon just edges it.
